Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the retired Lt. Col. George N. Charlton, Jr. for his service to his community, city and country.

WHEREAS, Lt. Col. George N. Charlton, Jr., retiree of the US Army, was born April 12, 1923 and raised in the City of Pittsburgh, where he lives with his wife Nadine and their 5 children; and,
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Charlton was drafted in 1943 as a private to serve the U.S. Army-10th Calvary Regiment 2nd Calvary Division in WWII, and he also served as a Buffalo Soldier in Africa and Italy before being honorably discharged in 1945; and,
 
WHEREAS, Sergeant Charlton went through ROTC and became an officer in 1952, was trained at the U.S. Treasury Department Law Enforcement Officers training school, and received a BA from the University of Pittsburgh in Business Administration where he also attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Public and International Affairs; and,
 
WHEREAS, Lt. Col Charlton had a remarkable career of service to his city and county marked by a series of firsts, becoming the first African American commanding officer of the 336 Military Police, the first African American Battalion Provost Marshall in the 99th Army Reserve Command, the first African American to be a Special Agent (Criminal Investigator) to the U.S. Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service, Intelligence Division, Pittsburgh, and the first African American executive director of the Pittsburgh Public Parking Authority; and
 
WHEREAS, Lt. Col Charlton is a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, a Life Member of the NAACP, Sr. Vice Commander of the Angel-Bolen VFW Post 4040, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc., a life member of the Reserve Officers Association of the U.S., and a member of the SW Pennsylvania Army Retiree Council;
