2007-1609 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, Eight Homewood Elementary School students participated in the Rails-To-Trails Conservancy's first "youth scholarship program," an adventure that enable them to join the Greenway Sojourn bicycle ride; and WHEREAS, the students participating in the last 3 days of an 8 day 335 mile trip, beginning in Washington, DC and concluding in Station Square include: Devon Brown , Ronald Coker, Jamie Foltz, Malaysia Henderson, Allison McAfee, Whitney Owens, Tamond Russell and John Spell all 11year olds who attend the Helen S. Faison Arts Academy in Homewood; and WHEREAS, The ride took them over the Mansion-Dixon Line, through the 3,300-foot-long Big Savage Tunnel; across the Eastern Continental Divide near Deal in southern Somerset county, the highest point on the passage; over the Keystone Viaduct and to the restored Western Maryland Railway Station in Meyersdale; and WHEREAS, the students were accompanied by vice principal Anthony Pipkin and mentors Brain Funk, Holly Hudson, Marylou White and Bruce and Shelia Wood. 2007-1611 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 the Council of the City of Pittsburgh wishes to honor Joshua Smith on his award of a $1,000 Carson Scholars Fund Award to be used toward any college to further his education; and, WHEREAS, Dr. Ben Carson from John Hopkins Hospital and University created the Carson Scholars Fund Award as a National Scholars Program for students who achieve academic excellence; and, WHEREAS, Joshua Smith maintained High Honor Roll status throughout his freshman year at Vincentian Academy as an Award recipient, which has earned him the Carson Award for the second year in a row as he enters his Sophomore year; and, WHEREAS, Joshua Smith also received the Mind, Heart and Spirit Award from Vincentian Academy, which is voted upon by faculty and peers, and is awarded to one male and one female student from grades 9-12, and this award is a great testament to his academic and personal accomplishments; and, WHEREAS, in addition to school work, Joshua also participates on the Golf Team, and serves as a volunteer at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. 2007-1612 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix (PVGP) is our nation's longest running vintage race event and is celebrating 25 consecutive years in 2007; WHEREAS, the first meeting was held in a Shadyside garage in 1982 and the first event was a 1-day race held on September 3, 1983, with many of the original attendees still participating in the event today; WHEREAS, PVGP is the nation's only vintage race staged on public roads and 2.3 miles of Pittsburgh city streets in Schenley Park are closed to allow the nearly 200 cars to race; WHEREAS, there are 1,200 individuals who volunteer each year to stage the Grand Prix which makes the PVGP the largest volunteer-based event in vintage racing; WHEREAS, 2007 has been designated "Year of the Volunteer" to honor the individuals who take time away from their families and their work to make the event a success; WHEREAS; PVGP has raised $2 million since 1983 for the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School and last year made its largest donation to date of $160,000.
