2007-1556 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 the City wishes to honor Sam L. Baskins Jr. for his admirable service to the youth of our city; and, WHEREAS, Sam L. Baskins Jr. dedicated most of his adult life to coaching young boys and girls in athletics, first as T-ball players, progressing to Little Leaguers, and finally on to Pony League Players; and WHEREAS, Sam Baskins served as the Founder of the Dunbar Athletic Conference from 1968-1977. He worked with the Greater North Side Athletic Association's Football Program, served as the Founder of the GNAA's Baseball Program, and went on to become President and Commissioner of the Greater North Side Athletic Association from 1977-1995; and WHEREAS, Sam Baskins' passion for the game stemmed from his own life experiences, where he played semi pro baseball with the Pittsburgh Corsaiers and Homewood Brownies,; he played minor league ball with the Cincinnati Reds as a second baseman and catcher, and also played on several all star teams in South Florida and Georgia; and WHEREAS, one of Sam's greatest sources of pride was founding the "HaAdoptedPass Action details

Washington Section of the City of Pittsburgh, is celebrating their 75th Anniversary with various events held throughout 2007; and WHEREAS, Chatham Village lies within the "Penn's Woods" tract of land granted to William Penn by King Charles II of England in 1681; the land and much of the surrounding area was later purchased by Major Abraham Kirkpatrick, a Revolutionary War officer and Pittsburgh alderman, from the Penn heirs; and WHEREAS, Major Kirkpatrick's granddaughter, Maria Louisa Bigham, eventually was bequeathed a section of the hilltop property including the Village acreage, where she and her husband Thomas crowned the wooded rise with a spacious home in 1843-44; and WHEREAS, the mansion and surrounding property, now known as Chatham Village, were retained by the Bigham family until 1931, when Pittsburgh's Buhl Foundation purchased the holdings as an experiment to provide high-quality housing in a garden setting for middle-income families and provide a reasonable return to the Foundation; and AdoptedPass Action details
2007-1560 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, James Paul "Jimbo" Covert, was born on March 22 , 1960 , in Freedom Area High School in Beaver County, just north of the City of Pittsburgh. WHEREAS, in 1979, Jimbo Covert became a defensive lineman for the Pitt Panthers. In 1980, he switched to offense and started his final three seasons. During that time, Pitt went 31-5 with three consecutive Top 10 finishes. The '80 and '81 teams went 11-1, finishing No. 2 in the nation. Jimbo allowed just three sacks in his final three seasons - zero as a senior; and, WHEREAS, the Panther offensive line unit, which included football greats Mark May and Russ Grimm, was coached by the legendary Joe Moore. The unit ably protected their star QB, Dan Marinio. It was called the greatest "O" line ever assembled by their coach, Jackie Sherrill, and the only coach ever to defeat them - Florida State's Bobby Bowden. 2007-1561 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, Representatives Mark Udall (D-NM) and Todd Platts (R-PA) have introduced House Bill 969 to establish a national Renewable Energy Standard (RES) and to require that 20 percent of America's electricity be produced by renewable sources by 2020; and WHEREAS, a national Renewable Energy Standard would require that electric providers produce a set percentage of their electricity from renewable sources including wind, solar, geothermal and bioenergy; and WHEREAS, a 2006 analysis by U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) found that by obtaining 20 percent of our electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020, the United States could cut global warming pollution over 500 million tons, which is the equivalent of removing 89 million cars from the road; and WHEREAS, a recent analysis done by the Union of Concerned Scientists also predicts that the 20% by 2020 Renewable Energy Standard would create over 355,000 new high-paying jobs and save consumers over $49 billion on gas and electric bills; and WHEREAS, in a commissioned study, the Apollo Alliance ranked PennsylvaniAdoptedPass Action details
