WHEREAS veterinary technicians work as a team with veterinarians in order to diagnose diseases and injuries, prescribe treatments, and perform surgery on animals; and
WHEREAS veterinary technicians also perform many essential medical duties independently, such as placing IV's, collecting blood samples, performing laboratory testing, maintaining medical records, diagnostic imaging, administering and monitoring anesthesia, supervising recovery, animal dentistry, in addition to handling the smelly, dirty, and least glamorous tasks of veterinary medicine; and
WHEREAS veterinary technicians must possess an expert knowledge of mathematics, English, and science, as well as superior observation skills, creativity, flexibility, the ability to multitask during surgery, as well as physical strength and dexterity; and

| 1 | | Proclamation | WHEREAS, on October 16, 2007, Women in Film and Media Pittsburgh (WIFM) will be hosting their first Opal Awards to honor local women who have made an impact in television and film; and
WHEREAS, WIFM is among 37 chapters around the world that are dedicated to improving the status and portrayal of women in film, video and other screen based media; and
WHEREAS, WIFM places an emphasis on education and works in conjunction with other non-profit organizations to help community members gain access to the media industry; and
WHEREAS, a WIFM Opal Award will be presented to Suzanne DeLaurentis, for her achievements in film and television as the producer of films, including 10th and Wolf; and
WHEREAS, WIFM will award the Patti Burns Award for Excellence and Achievement in Television Scholarship to Heather Mallick in honor of the late Patti Burns.

WHEREAS, Dan Romaniello has spent his life in the service of others, giving of his time and talents and incorporating his love of his family with a commitment to his community; and,
WHEREAS, Dan Romaniello worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 29 plus years as a Tunnel Maintainer at the Pittsburgh Tunnels, performing duties such as keeping the tunnels and roadways safe, putting out car fires, responding to accident scenes and even delivering a baby at the Liberty Tunnels ; and,
WHEREAS, Dan was the PennDot District 11 Safety Committee Chairman, a Delegate to the Allegheny County Labor Council while serving as an officer in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union for 27 years, serving in every capacity from Secretary Treasurer to its President while also taking on the duties of Chief Steward until his retirement; and,

| 1 | | Proclamation | WHEREAS, Saint Basil Catholic Parish was established on February 14, 1907 by Pittsburgh Bishop Regis Canevin to care for the people and the needs of the growing Catholic community in Carrick; and
WHEREAS, Saint Basil Parish is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout this year, along with a special Centennial event on October 14, 2007; and
WHEREAS, Saint Basil's first pastor, Reverend Charles Steppling, was appointed in February of 1907. As of January 1, 2004, Father James R. Torquato was installed as Saint Basil's current and sixth pastor; and
WHEREAS, to accommodate the growing congregation, Father Steppling proceeded with the construction of the present church, which was dedicated by Bishop Hugh Boyle on October 7, 1923; and
WHEREAS, Saint Basil Parish has provided a quality Catholic education in both its elementary school and its high school, with the generous service of the Sisters of Divine Providence, for thousands of students during the past century; and

Whereas, Violence is a serious problem in both homes and schools that affect men and women of all races and ages. Women are particularly at risk for abuse as 31% of women report being physically or sexually abused during their lifetime and in 2000, 1,247 women and 440 men were murdered by their partner. Violence among youth is also on the rise as 11% of students in grades 6-10 report being a victim of bullying; and
Whereas, The YWCA's Week Without Violence campaign will focus attention on practical and sustainable alternatives to violence with programs at YWCAs, schools, community organizations, neighborhoods, and workplaces nationwide and around the world; and
