2007-1359 1 ProclamationWHEREAS the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) is the premier African American law enforcement organization in the country, with over 56 national chapters, including three located in Pennsylvania, specifically Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh; and WHEREAS the original NOBLE was formed in September of 1979 at a three day conference during which specialists in law enforcement were seeking to address the larger issue of crime within the urban, American context; and WHEREAS sixty of those conference attendees were to become the founders of NOBLE, with these individuals including the City of Pittsburgh's first African American Police Chief William H. Moore; and WHEREAS NOBLE'S membership consists of federal, state, county, local, campus, school, corrections, and civilian personnel, who collaboratively attempt to deal with issues surrounding fairness in the administration of justice, police-community relationships, and the hiring, promotion, and retention of quality, African American law enforcement officers; and WHEREAS these members keeAdoptedPass Action details
2007-1360 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, The Harmony Singers of Pittsburgh, celebrating their 41st season, was first formed as the Westminster Community Singers in 1966 and in 1976, under the directorship of Rita Huckle, became The Harmony Singers of Pittsburgh; and WHEREAS, The Harmony Singers of Pittsburgh, a non-profit volunteer group that performs musical revues and choral presentations, consists of men and women who span many ages and who enjoy performing throughout the Greater Pittsburgh area. 2007-1363 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, Mr. William Sell came to Pittsburgh in 1948 to work for PPG Industries; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sell started Will Sell Chocolates in 1986 on Walnut Street in Shadyside after retiring from PPG in 1984; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sell became active in the Walnut Street Chamber of Commerce as a merchant in 1986; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sell continued to volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce even after selling his store in 1994; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sell is passionate about jazz music and he works to promote jazz festivals and performance opportunities in Shadyside; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sell has two sons and two grandchildren and currently resides on Fifth Avenue in Shadyside; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sell's efforts help to make the neighborhood more attractive to visitors and shoppers by improving the environment of the business district; and WHEREAS, in recognition of Mr. Sell's and his wife's contributions to the Shadyside business district, efforts are being made to rename the parklet on Walnut Street the "Jane and Will Sell Parklet."
