2007-1280 1 ProclamationWHEREAS the safety of children remains a major concern throughout the United States, with frequent reports of child abductions and violent crimes committed against children occurring in most metropolitan and rural areas; and WHEREAS in September of 2000, the untimely and violent death of Scott Drake, a youth from Pittsburgh's East Allegheny neighborhood, spurred Allegheny General Hospital and its Auxiliary organization, in conjunction with the North Side Leadership Conference and two, local high school students, to create the Stranger Danger Awareness Program, in order to educate the Northside's youth regarding the risk involved when interacting with unknown persons; and WHEREAS since its inception, the Stranger Danger Awareness Program has succeeded in educating 2,000 children from nine different elementary schools, all of which are located on Pittsburgh's Northside; and WHEREAS currently in its sixth year, this year's program is working with elementary school students from the Morrow Elementary School, the Martin Luther King Accelerated Learning Academy, and the AlleghenyAdoptedPass Action details
2007-1281 1 ProclamationWHEREAS, Russell Faust, son of Robert and Mercedes Faust, began his scouting career in 1998 when he joined the Cub Scout Pack 601 at Resurrection Church and proceeded to earn Cub Scouting's highest honor, the Arrow of Light; and WHEREAS, upon joining Boy Scout Troop 6 Russell served as Patrol Leader, Instructor, Quartermaster, and Senior Patrol Leader. All of these positions of leadership involved a variety of responsibilities and helped him better understand that "Scouting is a game with a purpose;" and WHEREAS, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Dave Harper, Russell completed advanced training for Boy Scouts, Junior Leadership Training (JLT) and went on to work as a staff member for two years.; and WHEREAS, in addition to scouting activities, Russell played soccer with the local soccer program; he played in several All-Star games and on teams that won four league championships. He was also involved in two school-wide science fairs, one at the local gifted center and came in first place in both competitions.
