Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and honor the late Lieutenant Colonel Juanita Warman for her unselfish service to our country and the Council of the City of Pittsburgh gives their gratitude to her family for their unselfish sacrifice and gives our deepest sympathy for their loss; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, November 10, 2011, to be “Lieutenant Colonel Juanita Warman Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on November 5, 2009 thirteen people were killed when an Army psychiatrist allegedly opened fire on soldiers at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas one of whom was Lieutenant Colonel Juanita Warman, the highest ranking soldier there, who had been at Fort Hood for only 24 hours to be processed for duty in Iraq; and,
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Juanita Warman was born on September 9, 1954 and grew up in Sheraden where she attended Langley High School and later earned her master's degree in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, her military career spanned 25 years in active duty and Army reserves serving previously in Operation Enduring Freedom; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Warman was a certified psychiatric nurse practitioner who was an expert in post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury and was instrumental in creating a post-traumatic stress disorder program for the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, which helps soldiers and their families reacclimate to civilian life; and,
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Warman served 2 years overseas at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and she regularly volunteered for round-trip flights to accompany wounded soldiers from Iraq to Germany and on to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington; and,
WHEREAS, Lt. Warman was awarded a badge for meritorious service for her efforts in 2005; an Army Commendation Medal in 2006 for her service at Landstuhl; and was honored at a memorial service in Fort Hood by President Obama on November 10, 2009; and,
