Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize ZOA Pittsburgh and Mayor Masloff, County Executive Roddey, Janice Greenwald, and Lawrence Paper for their leadership and contributions to the community; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the October 25th, 2011 “Zionist Organization of America Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, founded in 1897, the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) is the oldest Zionist organization in the United States; and
 
WHEREAS, ZOA works to educate the public and elected officials about issues important to Jewish people and the state of Israel, fights anti-Semitism, and seeks legal means to safeguard the rights of Jewish people in the United States and Israel; and
 
WHEREAS, ZOA Pittsburgh hosts events on a wide range of topics related to Judaism and the state of Israel, promotes the purchase of Israeli stocks and bonds, awards scholarships to young people across the region, sponsors interfaith trips to Israel, and promotes tolerance and understanding by sending Allegheny County high school students on field trips to the United States Holocaust Musem; and
 
WHEREAS, ZOA Pittsburgh will honor four community leaders at an awards ceremony and dinner on Wednesday, October 26th at Congregation Beth Shalom; and
 
WHEREAS, former Mayor Sophie Masloff and former County Executive Jim Roddey will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards, Janie Greenwald of Hadassah will receive the Natalie E. Novick Community Leadership Award, and Lawrence Paper, a highly accomplished Pittsburgh attorney, will receive the Israel Service Award.
