Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates Principal Sandra Och, Carmalt teachers, and students for being a part of a program that embraces the unique and diverse cultures of our City neighborhoods; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Council declares October 25, 2011 to be Pittsburgh Carmalt Science & Tech Academy Day in the City of Pittsburgh

WHEREAS, Crayola partnered with the National Association of Elementary School Principles to grant twenty schools with funding for innovative programs aimed at fostering children's critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication skills; and
WHEREAS, the grant program, entitled "Champion Creatively Alive Children" asked educators to nurture their students' imaginations by creating unconventional programs inspired by the question, "what if?"; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Carmalt Science & Tech Academy in Brookline was awarded a Creatively Alive grant for a unique and challenging program developed by Principal Sandra Och; and
WHEREAS, the Carmalt Creatively Alive program encouraged students to explore the role of immigration and community on architecture and arts throughout our diverse Pittsburgh neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Carmalt's 600 students, who come from 30 different Pittsburgh neighborhoods, shared the unique cultures of their communities, and learned to embrace the similarities and differences among them; and  
WHEREAS, students designed their own communities, and Architecture students from Carnegie Mellon University worked with students to build three-dimensional replicas of buildings in their neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Carmalt students then created commercials to promote their ideal neighborhood and shared them with students in other schools through distance learning; and
