Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and welcomes the Consul General of Italy to our city; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, October 17th “Italy Then and Now Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on March 17th 2011 Italy celebrated the 150th anniversary of its unification as a single state; and
 
WHEREAS, Giuseppe Garibaldi's heroic campaign to unify Italy, which occurred at the same time as the American Civil War, inspired groups around the world, even spurring a New York State infantry unit to go by the nickname "The Garibaldi Guard"; and
 
WHEREAS, to honor the history of Italy's struggle for unification and the contributions that people of Italian heritage have made to the Pittsburgh region, Duquesne University will host a day of events on Monday, October 17th entitled "Italy Then and Now: 150th Anniversary"; and
 
WHEREAS, the day will kick off with an exhibit at Duquesne's Gumberg Library, followed by a musical performance, and finally a banquet dinner and roundtable discussion; and
 
WHEREAS, Italy's Consul General, The Honorable Luigi Scotto, serves as the Honorary Chairperson for the events and will be in attendance.
