WHEREAS, Pittsburgh will celebrate the National Day of Doing Good with "Make a Difference Day," a week-long initiative from October 16th through October 22nd, 2011 that encourages local impact through volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Cares and HandsOn Northeast Ohio have joined forces to create a friendly competition in the name of service by expanding the day into an entire week of events; and
WHEREAS, whichever city logs the most volunteer hours at the end of the week will win, but both cities will benefit from the positive impact of community engagement; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Cares, founded in 1992, is the region's largest volunteer organization, partnering with over 500 nonprofit organizations to enhance the role of regional service partners in community engagement; and
WHEREAS, in 2010, Pittsburgh Cares coordinated over 2,500 volunteer projects through a network of over 10,000 active youth and adult volunteers, and clocked a total of 80,000 hours of service.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Pittsburgh Cares for their incredible commitment to service and their contributions to the City's future through their mission of inspiration through action; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of October 16th through October 22nd, 2011 "Make a Difference Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
