Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the important work of the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania, and encourages residents of the City of Pittsburgh to assist Pittsburgh's homeless animals by going online to www.animalrescue.org from October 17 to October 31, 2001, and vote in the 2011 ASPCA $100K Challenge; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of October to be “Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania - 2011 ASPCA $100K Challenge Month” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the 2011 ASPCA $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters and their communities to get more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before; and
WHEREAS, the ASPCA $100K Challenge contestants must save at least 300 more animals during the months of August, September & October 2011 compared with the same period in 2010; and
WHEREAS, the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania is a premier Open Door shelter, that takes in and cares for both wild and domestic animals, including the animals collected from the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Animal Care & Control, accepting each and every animal brought to it by the public, thereby giving even those animals a second chance at a happy life; and
WHEREAS, the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania was founded in the year 1909 and for over a century has remained true to its mission: to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention and comfort to neglected and injured animals; to restore lost animals to their owners or seek new homes for them; and to educate the public about the humane care of animals; and
WHEREAS, the greatest increase in lives saved by the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania compared to the other 49 contestants wins a $100,000 grant from the ASPCA to support their continued lifesaving work; and
WHEREAS, the most online votes from Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania supporters compared to the other 49 contestants wins an additional $25,000 for the ASPCA Community Engagement Award; and
WHEREAS, the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania would use $100,000 for a new transport vehicle to increase outreach to other area shelters that have lower live release rates;
