Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor Nicholas Foley as the 2011-12 Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Youth of the Year, and does hereby declare Monday, October 17, 2011, to be “Nicholas Foley Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the National Youth of the Year Program, begun in 1947, selects a young person each year who has "overcome enormous odds and demonstrated exceptional character and accomplishments" including "service to their Club and community, academic performance and contributions to their family"; and
WHEREAS, Nicholas Foley has been a member of Sarah Heinz House Boys & Girls Club on Pittsburgh's North Side, spending time six days a week for the past decade participating in nearly every program and community service project the club offers; and
WHEREAS, his aunt, Karen Foley of the North Side, the volunteers and mentors at the Sarah Heinz House changed his life with their emphasis on developing his personal character, respect for others and belief in himself; and
WHEREAS, Nick has taken advantage of everything the Sarah Heinz House Club has to offer, he excelled at athletic programs, including soccer, basketball and hockey, while being a shining example of sportsmanship; and
WHEREAS, by high school, Nick helped younger children with homework, worked as a Junior Staffer, participated on the robotics team, in the music and dance program, and also now works as a counselor at the Boys & Girls Club's summer resident camp; and
WHEREAS, Nick entered his senior year at Taylor Allderdice High School this fall, a school he selected to attend based on its pre-engineering programs and upon graduation in 2012, plans to enter Penn State University to become a civil engineer; and
WHEREAS, serving as president of his Boys & Girls Club's Keystone Club, a program that emphasizes leadership and community service, Nick has logged over 1,500 hours of giving back to his community including an array of community service projects, from cleaning up neighborhood streets, to collecting items for a Pittsburgh resident who lost everything in a fire, to organizing a Christmas toy drive for kids who had lost a parent; and
