Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Pittsburgh Colfax Accelerated Academy on the occasion of its 100 year anniversary and wishes the Colfax School community much success in the next 100 years; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, October 15, 2011, to be “COLFAX CENTENNIAL DAY “ in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools is the largest of 43 school districts in Allegheny County, the second largest in Pennsylvania and serves approximately 26,000 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 in 64 schools, holding itself accountable for preparing all children to achieve academic excellence and strength of character so that they have the opportunity to succeed in life ; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Colfax Accelerated Academy, previously known as Colfax Elementary School, has been one of the Pittsburgh School District's most progressive, dynamic and distinguished schools in the City ; and,
WHEREAS, originally established in 1865 as a one room school on Forward Avenue with 115 students, it was moved to Philips Avenue in 1873, named in honor Vice President Schuyler Colfax and opened again with 324 students, 4 teachers and one principal ; and,
WHEREAS, in 1911, a new building was built on its current location at 2332 Beechwood Boulevard and following a 47,000 sq foot expansion in 2006 that currently houses the Middle School, an updated cafeteria and a gymnasium/auditorium, it currently educates more than 700 students from the East End, Homewood and Squirrel Hill who hail from over 40 countries ; and,
WHEREAS, Colfax School will be holding a Centennial Celebration on October 15, 2011, to recognize that in its 100 years on Beechwood Boulevard, it has become a premier institution of elementary education, involving parents, students, teachers and community members to create an innovative, student focused and achievement oriented school.
