Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pittsburgh for the selfless work they do in educating and researching the topic of breast cancer; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of October, 2011 to be “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister Susan G. Komen that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer and started Susan G. Komen for the Cure in her honor with a promise to save lives and end breast cancer by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures; and,
WHEREAS, to kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pittsburgh hosted its 3rd annual Paws for the Cure walk on October 2, 2011; and,
WHEREAS, Komen Race for the Cure is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world and raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease; and,
WHEREAS, the first Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure® was held in 1993 and it has since become an annual Mother's Day tradition for thousands of residents from the tri-state area with its 20th race to be held on May 13, 2012 at Schenley Park at Flagstaff Hill; and,
WHEREAS, Team Komen Pittsburgh is also participating in the 2012 Pittsburgh Marathon, Half Marathon, 5 person Relay Team on May 6, 2012, the 5K Run or Kids Marathon on May 5, 2012; and,
WHEREAS, race funds are used for the Mammogram Voucher Program, education, screening and treatment programs including fellowships in breast surgery and imaging, and programs to reach out to underserved populations; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh affiliate heads the successful Teens for the Cure program for middle and highs school students which has provided many area students opportunities for academic and personal growth; and,
