WHEREAS, acts of domestic violence occur every 15 seconds in the United States and is something that affects the entire family; and,
WHEREAS, since 1978, Crisis Center North, formerly North Hills Women's Center, has been empowering victims of domestic violence and cultivating community attitudes and behaviors that break the cycle of violence; and,
WHEREAS, Crisis Center North relies on trained professionals and valuable volunteers to provide services such as individual counseling, support groups, legal advocacy and hotline counselors; and,
WHEREAS, Crisis Center North reaches out to youth by providing school programming including topics on dating violence and healthy relationships, bullying and anger management and they a VolunTEEN program that gives youth a voice in creating a violence free community by conducting presentations, staffing information booths or being an advocate in their school or community; and,
WHEREAS, October 26, 2011, a free viewing of Telling Amy's Story, a timeline of a domestic violence homicide that occurred in 2001 will be played at the RMU, Sewall Center followed by a panel discussion led by Crisis Center North on how to recognize and respond when domestic violence occurs; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Crisis Center North for the work their staff and volunteers do in educating and combating domestic violence in our communities; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of October to be "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in the City of Pittsburgh.
