Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum for their ongoing commitment to and support of the region's veterans; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 11, 2011 to be “Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum, located on Fifth Avenue in Oakland, is one of Pittsburgh's treasures, a historical landmark, and the United States' largest memorial hall honoring both career and citizen soldiers; and
WHEREAS, originally constructed to honor the memory of those who served in the Civil War, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum now honors all of those Pennsylvanians, in all branches of the service, who have fought for our country throughout its history; and
WHEREAS, designed by Pittsburgh-based architect Henry Hornbostel, the Hall opened its doors on October 9, 1910; and
WHEREAS, as the grand finale of the Hall's year-long 100th anniversary celebration they will host the Cannon Ball Military Follies Revue on Sunday, October 16th; and
WHEREAS, this annual fundraiser helps to support the museum's educational programs, allows them to continue their many veteran outreach programs, and assists with the maintenance and upkeep of the Hall; and
WHEREAS, the family-friendly event will feature song, dance, and stage performances from local artists on patriotic themes, a tour of their grand historic building, a silent auction, and an awards ceremony for the Honorable Michael E. McCarthy of the Court of Common Pleas who will be given the 2011 Friend & Patriot of the Year award for his dedication and support of the veterans of Allegheny County.
