Title: WHEREAS, Winchester Thurston School, located in the heart of Shadyside, is celebrating its 125 anniversary this year; and

WHEREAS, Winchester Thurston School, located in the heart of Shadyside, is celebrating its 125 anniversary this year; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1887, Winchester Thurston is an independent pre-kindergarten through 12th grade college preparatory school committed to the principles of civic engagement, service learning, critical thinking, empathy, community, and diversity; and
 
WHEREAS, the school's mission is to "actively engage each student in a challenging and inspiring learning process that develops the mind, motivates the passion to achieve, and cultivates the character to serve"; and
 
WHEREAS, this mission and Winchester Thurston students outstanding achievements have not gone unnoticed, as the school has recently received two prestigious awards, a $2 million endowment grant from the Malone Family Foundation and a $250,000 matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation Leadership Grant program; and
 
WHEREAS, Winchester Thurston will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a birthday party on September 2 and many other events in the year to come.
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Winchester Thurston School's 125th anniversary and thank the administrators, faculty, staff, parents and students for their commitment to academic excellence and community engagement; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare September 2, 2011 "Winchester Thurston School Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
