WHEREAS, the Creative Arts Renewal Effort (C.A.R.E.) was established in 2008 by its current Director Mr. Ron Bernhardy and is currently housed at Emanuel United Methodist Church who has been a supporter of the ministry since its conception; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of C.A.R.E. is to encourage children in the West End/Elliott neighborhoods to explore the arts as a way to learn important life skills by expressing themselves creatively while improving their academics; and,
WHEREAS, the C.A.R.E. program provides free classes in arts and crafts, music, dance, acting and more and it has been documented that including arts in education is linked to better test scores and creative thinking; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to the benefits of the classes the program provides the students with a safe place to go after school and during the summer; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the C.A.R.E. Program and all of its volunteers for the work they do in promoting the arts and making a positive difference in the lives of our children; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, August 30, 2011, to be "C.A.R.E. Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
