Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and honor Mr. Tony Mowod for the work he has and continues to do in promoting and preserving jazz and its history; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, July 19, 2011, to be “Tony Mowod” day in the City of Pittsburgh.

BODY
WHEREAS, Tony Mowod, the son of Lebanese immigrants, grew up in the Hill where he attended Epiphany grade school in the Lower Hill and was taught piano by the Mercy nuns; he later attended Central Catholic High School and currently resides in Brookline; and,
WHEREAS, inspired as a teenager by the great jazz artists in Pittsburgh, Tony Mowod studied music at Duquesne University making the vibraphone his instrument of choice; and,
WHEREAS, during college, he acted with the universities amateur theater company, the Red Masquers and spun a jazz show on WDUQ, eventually chasing his acting dreams in New York only to return to Pittsburgh to raise a family and return to radio broadcasting; and,
WHEREAS, in the late eighties, Mr. Mowod produced and broadcasted “the Night Side”, his jazz show on WDUQ, which stayed on the air over 23 years airing his last show on June 30, 2011; and,
WHEREAS, in 1987, Mr. Mowod founded the Pittsburgh Jazz Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, preservation and perpetuation of all jazz accomplished through education, performance, partnering and community outreach for members and the general public; and since 1988, the organization started a Pittsburgh Jazz Hall of Fame and has awarded over a quarter of a million dollars in scholarship money to student musicians; and,
WHEREAS, Tony Mowod is the recipient of numerous honors and awards most recently in 2009 he was named a "Champion of Jazz" by the Washington Jazz Society, and in 2010 he was honored as a Jefferson Awards winner for his work with the Pittsburgh Jazz Society; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to the broadcast, Mr. Mowod is an Adjunct Professor of Jazz History at Duquesne University School of Music, and serves on the boards of the American Federation of Jazz Societies and Pittsburgh First Night, along with being an advisor for Pitt's Center for Latin
American Studies and the Pittsburgh Folk Festival and still finds time to be ...
