Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize, commend and thank this dedicated crew for their accomplishments; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, July 19, 2011, to be “Emerald View Park Crew Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

BODY
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Partnership/Dept of Personnel, the Birmingham Foundation, and PNC Charitable Trusts had the vision, commitment and courage to generously provide funding to support a partnership known as the Emerald View Park Green Jobs Training project for the purpose of providing workforce development, skills training, experiential learning, job placement and work experience to young adults residing in the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, Emerald View Park Green Jobs Training partners A. Philip Randolph, GTECH Strategies and One Vision One Life, provided 6 weeks of life and job skills through an initiative known as “Breaking the Chains of Poverty”; and,
WHEREAS, Jamar Johnson, Jared McCray, Nathaniel Thomas, Stewart Townsend, and Christopher Smith graduated from the training program on May 12, 2011 and have been certified by the Tony Mazzocchi Center for Health, Safety, and Environmental Education for NIEHS Certified HAZWOPER 1, 2, and 3 and NIEHS Certified Mold Remediation Project; and,
WHEREAS, since May 16th, these five extraordinary men, supervised by crew leader Thomas Guentner, have implemented their training through a comprehensive conservation service-learning program, planned and managed by the staff of the Student Conservation Association (SCA), with additional training and guidance provided by Environmental Planning & Design/Nature Shape and Mount Washington CDC; and,
WHEREAS, the Emerald View crew has worked tirelessly for 8 weeks accomplishing a remarkable amount of work including the creation of a half mile of new trail; removal of more than 40 tons of rock, debris and invasive plants; restoring hillside vegetation; creating erosion control devices and building retaining structures to fortify the trail; and,
WHEREAS, this Emerald View Park Crew has completed a variety of complex work projects that improve the Emerald View Park trail system and has contributed significantly to the quality of life for residents in Pittsbu...
