Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh welcomes the members of Lewis-Smithers Family as they gather in our City to celebrate the legacy of William Joseph and Lou Edna Carrington. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, declare Saturday, July 16, 2011, to be Lewis-Smithers Family Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on March 11, 1910, William Joseph Lewis married Lou Edna Carrington and from this union were born 19 children, including 5 sets of twins; and
WHEREAS, William Joseph and Edna Lou made their home in Darlington Heights, Virginia, where Papa Joe grew wheat, corn and tobacco and  raised chickens, hogs and cows to feed his family; and
WHEREAS, Mama Lou was recognized and honored as a social activist for fought for equal busing and educational opportunities for all children regardless of race, creed or color; and
WHEREAS, seven generations of the Lewis-Smithers Family will be gathering on July 15-17, 2011 in Pittsburgh, America's Most Livable City, and continuing a  tradition of family reunions which began with the first reunion in 1951.
