Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Judy Johnston for a life time of commitment to education and for a career spent teaching others to be better teachers, administrators and leaders; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, August 8, 2011, to be “JUDY JOHNSTON DAY ” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in the words of Abigail Adams, “Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Judy Johnston, a professional educator for over 40 years, will be retiring and bringing to fruition a stellar career marked by ardor, diligence, growth and success ; and,
WHEREAS, a graduate of Radford University, with an advanced degree from Hunter College, a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University and 60 post graduate credits, including a superintendent's letter of eligibility, she has spent her career in teaching, administration and professional development ; and,
WHEREAS, Judy Johnston has been a trainer of principals and superintendents as well as a consultant and has garnered national attention for her work in developing and leading the Schenley High School Teacher Center, a professional development program for high school teachers in the Pittsburgh Public Schools . She was also most notably the principal at Taylor Allderdice High School during a time of great transition both socially and academically and spearheaded the effort that resulted in Allderdice being named a Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education in 1996 ; and,
WHEREAS, Judy Johnston has worked with school and district leaders in Providence, RI, Los Angeles, CA, San Diego, CA, Austin, TX, the Bronx, NY, Fort Worth, TX, Karachi, Pakistan and Pittsburgh, sharing her expertise in school leadership. During her time at the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Learning, she participated in the development of the school and district leadership program including the LearningWalk, a trademarked protocol of the Institute. This past year, Dr. Johnston was instrumental in efforts to develop a teacher evaluation rubric (RISE) that is part of the major grant to Pittsburgh from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
