Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the students and teachers of Concord Elementary School for their outstanding district-wide performance in the First in Math competition; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates and celebrates the outstanding national performance of Ms. Cara Christian's second grade classroom in the First in Math competition.

WHEREAS, First in Math is an online program that helps students develop their math skills, ranging from single-step addition to complex algebra; and
 
WHEREAS, First in Math also encourages competition among individual students and teams by awarding virtual "stickers" for every three math problems that are solved correctly; and    
 
WHEREAS, studies have shown that students who play the First in Math game on a regular basis experience increased math proficiency, measured by standardized testing; and  
 
WHEREAS, now in it's fifth year of implementation, over 12,000 Pittsburgh Public School students, grades 1-8, participate in the First in Math program; and
 
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Concord Elementary K-5 placed first in the district-wide First in Math competition; and  
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Cara Christian's second grade classroom at Concord Elementary placed ninth in the United States in the First in Math competition; and  
 
WHEREAS, Joseph Johns, a student in Ms. Christian's second grade class is the top First in Math player at Concord Elementary, with 11,150 stickers;
