Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates The Academy for its exceptional recognition by CARF and its exemplary service to delinquent youth which provides the opportunity for these young men and woman to become better citizens and contributing members of society as they move into adulthood and does declare June 7, 2011 “The Academy Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Academy was awarded its second three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities or CARF for its innovative treatment of delinquent children, making special note of specific programs and people; and
WHEREAS, this is the highest level of certification awarded to an organization and shows the facility complied with CARF standards using on-site visits to prove that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable, and accountable; and
WHEREAS, in CARF's report, The Academy, serving students since 1982, received honors for programs that meet students' complex needs through both community-based and residential schools which care for youths, providing rehabilitative services including drug and alcohol treatment, mental health counseling, charter school education, family counseling, and a first-rate transportation system; and
WHEREAS, CARF praised Samuel A. Costanzo, The Academy Schools' Chief Executive Director, for his talent and enthusiastic, committed leadership, sharing his passion for high quality service and his vision for continued improvement; and
WHEREAS, the report mentions that The Academy has established itself as a dependable service provider with a powerful reputation among referring agencies and funders; and
WHEREAS, CARF commends the staff of The Academy, which is made up of enthusiastic, dedicated, professional, and truly caring team members who provide many needed services to vulnerable students, by both role-modeling and mentoring students to reach their potential; and
WHEREAS, the staff goes to great lengths to raise students' self-esteem by teaching them a more balanced lifestyle that includes educational opportunities, career preparation, community service, sports, life skills, and positive reinforcement of good behavior; and
WHEREAS, also mentioned, The Academy provides students with a solid educational foundation from which they can continue their academic purs...
