Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate and commend Tom Smith, as he carries on the tradition of a true community newspaper established 70 years ago and providing the residents of the Hilltop and South Side neighborhoods with an invaluable source of information. NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, proclaim, Tuesday, May 31, 2011, to be Tom Smith Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Smith Family has informed the residents of the South Pittsburgh neighborhoods of community events and matters of community interest, from 1979 to this day; and
 
WHEREAS, the Smith Family, first Roberta and now her son Tom, increased the coverage of The Reporter from its original distribution to Allentown, Beltzhoover, Bon Air, Montooth, Mt. Washington and South Side, to now include Carrick, Knoxville, and the Borough of Mt. Oliver, which now considers The Reporter to be its official newspaper; and
 
WHEREAS, the focus of The Reporter has always been on community events and neighborhood news, during World War II, The Reporter published Honor Rolls, Service News and helped to sell war bonds; during the 1970's and the closing of the steel mills, The Reporter was an invaluable source of information regarding help that was available to the displaced steel workers and their families; documented the resurgence of South Side and the development of the SouthSide Works; and has continued to keep the residents, workers and visitors in the Hilltop and South Side communities informed of what is happening in their communities, as well as, providing an outlet for businesses and community groups to get their message to the public; and
