WHEREAS, in 2004, The Association of Pittsburgh Black Nurses (APBNIA), started a nursing fund via the Poise Foundation. In 2007, the scholarship fund was renamed to the Evelyn Paige Parker scholarship.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Parker was a trailblazer in the field of nursing. In 1940, Mrs. Parker entered Mercy-Douglass Hospital School for Nurses in Philadelphia, she completed her basic nursing education in 1943; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Parker was a member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served on multiple committees. Mrs. Parker also volunteered as an insurance counselor through the Department of Aging Apprise program, was her church's representative to the East End Cooperative Ministries, and a member of the AARP 452's health committee. She was also involved in the Pittsburgh Black Nurses in Action (PBNIA), National Black Nurses Association, the Urban League and the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, among the awardees for 2011 are: Mary Gray, Fran Johnson, Lillie M. Lesesne, Dr. Luevonue Lincoln, Gladys L. Nesbit, and Adena Davis, who was the first African American to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. The keynote speaker is Jerome Taylor, PhD; Executive Director of the Center for Family Excellence, Chair and Associate Professor of African Studies, University of Pittsburgh. The annual event will be held June 25th, 2011, at the Churchill Country Club at 11:30am-3:30pm; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim May 31, 2011, to be designated, "The Association of Black Nurses in Action" day in the City of Pittsburgh.
