Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the students and teachers of The Future Is Mine and the Green Up Carrick project for their work to beautify Carrick High School; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Council of the City of Pittsburgh celebrates the project's focus on healthy urban agriculture and community involvement.

WHEREAS, the Carrick High School "The Future Is Mine" group works to engage students in career focused and unique, hands-on learning opportunities; and
 
WHEREAS, the team members support each other and their peers to earn the Pittsburgh Promise, a $20,000 - $40,000 scholarship for higher education; and
 
WHEREAS, Diane Rutten, Culinary Arts teacher and co-advisor of the team collaborated with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy,  and Grow Pittsburgh to develop the "Green Up Carrick" project with the support from the Consortium for Public Education the 2009-2011 school years; and
 
WHEREAS, the student team worked with these groups to beautify the school grounds by planting and caring for new trees and shrubs; and
 
WHEREAS, the team also created an "edible school yard" in the form of seven raised beds of organically gardened vegetables and herbs; and
 
WHEREAS, students plan to use the vegetables and herbs raised in the garden in the Carrick Culinary classroom; and
 
WHEREAS, the team will care for the garden over the summer and donate fresh vegetables to local families in need;
