Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby praise the work Carl Sellers does for the Head Start children at Martin Luther King Elementary School trying to keep them on the straight and narrow at such a young age, showing them his love and that someone cares for them, and does declare Tuesday, May 3, 2011, to be “Carl Sellers Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Carl Sellers was born in Macon, Georgia, raised in Pittsburgh, moved to Philadelphia to become a police officer, but returned to Pittsburgh to take care of his ill mother; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sellers is the father of four, Christina, Marilyn, Nicole, Carla and grandfather of eight, Amber, Curtis, Michael, Iyana, Presious Jewel, D'ara, Robert, and Chiristiana; and
WHEREAS, when Mr. Sellers became ill and was told to stop walking stairs, he moved to the Steelworkers Tower High Rise, but soon became bored and wanted to do something with his life that mattered; and
WHEREAS, his sister Marthena Scott, a foster grandparent, introduced him to the Head Start program at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School on the North Side where he began volunteering and was assigned to help the children with projects assigned by the teacher; and
WHEREAS, soon the children began to affectionately call Mr. Sellers "Pap Pap Carl" as he took them under his wing; and
WHEREAS, every time a child acts out, Mr. Sellers believes it is a cry for attention and Pap Pap Carl gives the children attention; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sellers feels rewarded by his work at the Martin Luther King Jr. Head Start and he enjoys being surprised what a child will do or say, be it creative, funny or lovingly; and
WHEREAS, the children in Head Start are three to five years old, and Mr. Sellers has been working with them for years, five days a week and wants to do more volunteering, possibly somewhere else, too;
