WHEREAS, The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman; and,
WHEREAS, the first call to prayer was in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation; and,
WHEREAS, in 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer and in 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May; and,
WHEREAS, when Congress designated the Day of Prayer, it intended that every faith and creed who sought to pray for this nation would be encouraged to do so in any way deemed appropriate; and,
WHEREAS, it is that broad invitation to the American people that led to the creation of the Task Force and the Judeo-Christian <http://nationaldayofprayer.org/about/judeo-christian/> principles on which it is based; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of the National Day of Prayer Task Force is to mobilize prayer in America in order to intercede for America's leaders and its families and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby invite all citizens of the City of Pittsburgh to join us on Thursday, May 5, 2011 and pray for America's leaders and their families; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 5, 2011, to be "The Day of Prayer" in the City of Pittsburgh.
