Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City if Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate the Pittsburgh Komen Race for the Cure for 18 years of successful advocacy and service to educate, screen, treat and, ultimately, eradicate breast cancer for the women of Southwestern and Central Pennsylvania ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, May 8, 2011, to be “PITTSBURGH KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure was originally organized by the National Council of Jewish Women in 1993 and has become an annual Mother's Day tradition for thousands of residents from across the tri-state area ; and,
 
WHEREAS, with what began as a goal of attracting 1,000 participants in its first year has grown into an event of more than 36,000 participants whose mission is to save lives and end breast cancer ; and,    
 
WHEREAS, the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure, a Komen Affilliate since 2005 , has raised $23 million to fund local breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment initiatives money in the 30 counties in western and central Pennsylvania that they serve; and,
 
WHEREAS, in addition to the millions of dollars in funding for the Mammogram Voucher Program and education and outreach programs, race funds have been used to purchase portable mammography equipment, fund fellowships in women's imaging and fund scholarships for technicians administering mammograms ; and,
 
WHEREAS, this year's Pittsburgh Komen Race for the Cure will take place on Mother's Day, Sunday, Mayy 8, 2011, at Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park with Registration at 6:30AM, Warm-up at 7:15AM, Kids Dash at 7:30AM, the Survivor Parade and Tribute at 8AM, the Competitive 5K Run and Walk at 8:35 AM and the 5K Walk and One Mile Fun Walk at 8:45 with awards and events to follow the Race.
