Title: Now, Therefore, be it resolved, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 to be designated “Homewood-Brushton YMCA” day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, in 1916 the Homewood-Brushton YMCA was holding meetings at a community Church at the corner of Bennett Street in Homewood Avenue. During this time churches were providing mock Olympic competitions and father-son banquets for boys, as well as, family picnics to unite the community. The house at 7140 Bennett Street was purchased in 1941 to be used as the permanent site of the Homewood-Brushton YMCA; and
 
WHEREAS, the Homewood-Brushton YMCA of Pittsburgh provides programming for all ages and serves as a gathering place for the entire community. The core values for the YMCA focus on Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Families prosper as the come together aspiring for a healthier lifestyle and the community relies on the social service programming; and
 
WHEREAS, the outreach programs and services offered by the Homewood Y include tutoring, counseling, youth prevention and food pantry. Members enjoy a fully equipped modern wellness center, a full gymnasium, indoor track, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and computer lab; and
 
WHEREAS, in 2008 the HOPE Fund Grant was created to serve as a funding resource for non-profit organizations that provide services to residents of the 9th Council District. In 2010, with all of their hard work and commitment to our communities, the Homewood-Brushton YMCA was recommended to receive a HOPE Fund Grant.
