WHEREAS, in order to help Pittsburghers navigate the steep terrain of this region quickly in the days before the automobile, pedestrian stairs sprung up all over the city; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh has the distinction as the U.S. city with the most public stairways at 712 sets of stairs; and
WHEREAS, Jennifer Kirk, lifelong resident of the Pittsburgh region, and Patrick Singleton, transplant to Pittsburgh from Portland, Oregon met while attending the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, upon moving to Polish Hill, Patrick and Jennifer promptly volunteered with the Polish Hill Civic Association's Green Team, which specializes in greening vacant lots and removing trash and overgrown greenery, as well as snow in the winter; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Public Works labors tirelessly to provide customer-friendly service while maintaining the City's infrastructure by resurfacing streets, preserving park facilities and rehabilitating public structures; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works also ensures public safety by responding to weather-related emergencies such as flooding, land subsidence, snow and ice storms, and other disasters; and
WHEREAS, the Polish Hill Civic Association invited Jennifer and Patrick to participate with the Department of Public Works in the first year of a City pilot program called Stair Stewards in which volunteers salt and sweep snow off of City steps; and
WHEREAS, 2011 marked the second year that Jennifer and Patrick have volunteered as Stair Stewards, working with the Department of Public Works, Sixth Division, deeming this City-citizen partnership a success.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor Jennifer Kirk, Patrick Singleton and the Department of Public Works, Sixth Division, of the City of Pittsburgh for their outstanding professional and personal commitment to the community they serve.
