WHEREAS, Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest youth organizations in the country, with over 4.5 million current youth members and an estimated total of 110 million members since its founding in 1910; and,
WHEREAS, Boy Scouts are trained to follow the core values of the organization, which include trustworthiness, good citizenship and outdoor skills, gained through a variety of activities that strengthen character and consequently raise each member's awareness and investment in the community they form a part of; and,
WHEREAS, nationally, one in seven children under the age of 12 faces hunger, with 10% of Pennsylvania households experiencing food insecurity, numbers that highlight a grave reality of malnutrition in the country which can result in a lifetime of increased illness and cognitive learning disabilities for those affected; and,
WHEREAS, in response to this national issue and in keeping with their values of good citizenship, Boy Scouts of America-Greater Pittsburgh Council has deemed April Scouting for Food Month, a community-wide effort to fight hunger; and,
WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts have partnered with the United Way, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, The Salvation Army and local companies, schools, labor unions and agencies in an effort to procure donations of canned foods and household items that will help in addressing the hunger issues faced by many children and families in the Pittsburgh region;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April to be "Scouting for Food Month" in the City of Pittsburgh, and encourages all citizens to participate by donating healthy and nutritious canned goods.
