WHEREAS, Troy Hill, part of The Reserve Tract, was incorporated in 1833 and settled by German immigrants who worked by the Allegheny River and worshiped on the hill; and
WHEREAS, by 1866, one hundred families were officially called Troy Hill residents and in 1877 they became the thirteenth ward of the City of Allegheny until the City was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1907; and
WHEREAS, in1971, Mary Wohleber, Troy Hill's "official historian," and other civic minded people, brought together those with similar ideas to form Troy Hill Citizens, Inc., and today during their 40th anniversary year, they are still going strong; and
WHEREAS, the first office manager and secretary, Cheryl Wedrick, the board, and lots of volunteers went to work on projects they felt strongly about; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Troy Hill Citizens, Inc. has accomplished many plans, becoming a 501(c)(3) in 1996, developing the old Troy Hill Public School site into Troy Hill Citizens, Inc. Park., saving old #39 -- the City's oldest firehouse - from the wrecking ball, creating Community Day in the Park and erecting the Western Pennsylvania Firefighters Memorial; and
WHEREAS, to improve housing in the District, Troy Hill Citizens, Inc. worked with local banks and government authorities to purchase, renovate and rent or sell properties on Straubs Lane, and Lautner Street, the Alte Haus (or Elder House) on Goettmann Street, six homes on Wickline Lane, and three homes on Cowley Street; and
WHEREAS, the Troy Hill Citizens Inc. office serves as a community-building space where they create the newsletter, communicate directly with Zone 1, help the unemployed with job listings and résumés for prospective employers, hold meetings, and plan projects like the recent 111 tree planting;
WHEREAS. looking forward, Troy Hill Citizens, Inc. created "the Heart of Troy Hill," an all encompassing master plan to improve and promote central Troy Hill by repaving the sidewalks, adding decorative street lighting, placing directional signs to points of interest, re-building community gardens and much more;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Troy Hill Citizens Inc. on their 40th Anniversary, a committed community group whose sole purpose is to serve the residents of Troy Hill,
AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Council declares Tuesday, March 29, 2011 to be Troy Hill Citizens, Inc. Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
