Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the People of the City of Pittsburgh recognize the important role that the arts play in our communities, by encouraging creativity, innovation, and healthy competition, as well as life and career skills that have long-lasting positive effects; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the City of Pittsburgh formally recognizes the organizers and performers in this event for their outstanding commitment to fair competition, performance excellence, and to this great community, and hereby declares March 5, 2011 “Pittsburgh Carrick Tournament of Bands Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Tournament of Bands is one of the largest competitive band organizations in the United States, with 13 chapters and over 400 members across the nation;
 
WHEREAS, on Saturday March 5, 2011 Pittsburgh Carrick High School will celebrate   25 years of hosting the Annual Tournament Indoor Association (TIA)Competition; and
 
WHEREAS, this competition is longest running indoor competition in Tournament of Bands Chapter VIII history; and
 
WHEREAS, the competition was started by now retired band director James Kraus - known to alumni for his tireless dedication and energy for the promotion of music in the lives of children - and now is run by current band director Sarah Giliberto since 2005; and
 
WHEREAS, the competition would not be possible without The Carrick Band Boosters, which include school parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, guardians, friends, other family members and supporters, all of whom pour immeasurable hours of volunteer time to coordinate band groups from across the region, run concessions as well as a penny social auction, and provide love, support and guidance to our school community; and
 
WHEREAS, members of the Pittsburgh Carrick Marching Band, pridefully act as greeters, runners, servers, cleaners, and whatever other jobs need to be done to make visitors feel at home and to host this outstanding event; and
 
WHEREAS, this "competition of the arts" features performances by percussion, dance, color guard, and majorette teams from all over the greater Pittsburgh area as well as special performances by the Pittsburgh Carrick High School Steel Drum Ensemble, Bagpipe Band, and Marching Band; and
 
WHEREAS, the school expects more than 1,000 visitors at this important and noteworthy event;
