Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Cribs for Kids for their success in reducing the incidence of SIDS through their awareness campaigns and successful outreach, and Mary and District Attorney Steven Zappala, Jr. for hosting the 6th Annual Celebrate & Share Women of Achievement Awards Dinner to honor the achievements of 24 women from the Pittsburgh Region whose work embodies the spirit of Women's History Month; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare March 2, 2011 to be “CELEBRATE & SHARE DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Cribs for Kids, a National Infant Safe Sleep Initiative that aims to eliminate Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and decrease infant mortality rates throughout Pennsylvania, was founded in 1998 in Pittsburgh by District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala, Jr., Judith Bannon, the late Mayor Bob O'Connor, and Commander Gwen Elliot; and,

 

WHEREAS, since 1998, Cribs for Kids has networked throughout Pennsylvania and has expanded to more than 260 partners in 47 states.  Judith Bannon, with her staff and volunteers, continues to spread the word about reducing SIDS and accidental suffocation by providing cribs for infants in need, and educating parents about practicing safe sleep for their babies.  Since the beginning of the campaign that recommends infants sleep on their backs - the “Back to Sleep” campaign - the incidence of SIDS has been reduced by fifty percent; and,

 

WHEREAS, Celebrate & Share was founded in 2002 by Bonnie DiCarlo and JoAnn R. Forrester to feature the achievements of women and raise funds for organizations which focus on the needs of women and children in the Pittsburgh community; and,   

 

WHEREAS, On March 2, 2011, the 6th Annual Celebrate & Share Women of Achievement Awards Dinner: “A Celebration of Women's History Month” will take place at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh. Proceeds from the event will benefit Cribs for Kids; and,

 

WHEREAS, This distinct gathering will honor 24 prominent women of achievement from the Pittsburgh Region.  The honorees include: Carmen Anderson, Dr. Barbara Baker, Lorraine Bittner, Sharon Chute, Dorothy Coll, Mary Ann Eisenreich, Peggy Finnegan, Susan Foreman Jordon, Esq.,  Paula Garret, Jada Grandy, Jayne Huston, Dusty Elias Kirk, Esq., Valerie McDonald Roberts, Velma Monterio, Robin Mungo, Teresa Petrick, Audrey Russo, Sandy Snyder, Dr. Helen C. Sobehart, Mary Ellen Sullivan, Sandy Thomas, Peg Wilson, and Council's very own Darlene Harris and Lynette Lederman.
