WHEREAS, Philip Ameris, serves as the President and Business Manager of the Laborers' District Council of Western Pennsylvania, with jurisdiction in 33 counties in Western Pennsylvania and also as the Business Manager of one of the largest heavy construction local unions in the United States, the Construction General Laborers and Material Handlers Local Union 1058; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ameris currently serves on several Boards pertaining to training and pension in the Labor industries, he chairs the Western Pennsylvania Laborers' Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, the Western Pennsylvania Laborers' Education and Training Trust Fund, the Laborers' Combined Funds of Western Pennsylvania Pension and Welfare Funds; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ameris has proudly represented members in all facets of the construction and private sector industry; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ameris has been a union member for 26 years, beginning as a truck driver for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; and
WHEREAS, now at the helm since the passing of Mr. Joseph LaQuatra, Mr. Ameris retains and increases the momentum of the Laborers Union in Western Pennsylvania with strength and enthusiasm; and
WHEREAS, Phil Ameris and his wife Jeanne, who will be married 30 years this July, are proud of their sons Philip Jr. and Jimmy, both also part of the Labor movement; and
WHEREAS, on February 17, 2011, at the Third Annual Mid-Atlantic Community Fund Dinner, Mr. Ameris is being named The Samuel Staten Sr. Award of Excellence Person of the Year for his leadership and activism;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Philip Ameris on being named Person of the Year by the Mid-Atlantic Community Fund, and does hereby declare February 17th to be "Philip Ameris Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
