Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Duquesne Law School for 100 Years of Excellence in the law and notes its motto, “The Welfare of the People is the Highest Law” to be the most noble of traditions and goals. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare 2011 to be the “DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW CENTENNIAL” and February 23, 2011, to be “DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Duquesne Law School, a private Catholic university law school, was founded in 1911, making it the first professional school added to Duquesne University after its inception in 1878, with classes beginning that September with only 12 students; and,
 
WHEREAS, Duquesne Law School was founded as an evening program, designed to allow individuals with family and work obligations the opportunity to study law and over the years, expanded to include full time day and part time programs, offering several degree programs, clinics, practicums and international study as well as the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law; and,    
 
WHEREAS, Duquesne Law School comprises over a third of the Allegheny County Bar Association, boasts over 5,800 alumni practicing in every field of law, in all 50 states and several foreign countries and is ranked in the fourth tier of law schools in the United States; and,
 
WHEREAS, the current Dean of the Duquesne Law School is respected author and legal scholar, Ken Gormley, an expert in Constitutional Law, the First Amendment and the American Presidency; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Duquesne Law School will celebrate the start of the Centennial with a Reception, Dinner and Keynote Address by Attorney General of the United States, Eric H. Holder, Jr. on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the William Patrick Power Center at Duquesne University.
