Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Metropolitan Baptist Church for their 160 years of service to the City of Pittsburgh; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare November 4, 2010 to be “Metropolitan Baptist Church Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Baptist Church, formerly known as First Colored Regular Baptist Church, Zion Baptist Church, and Green Street Baptist Church, was established in 1850 on Green Street in Allegheny City, making it the oldest black Baptist church in Western Pennsylvania,; and,

WHEREAS, Metropolitan's current pastor, the Reverend Lacy F. Richardson, Ph.D, joined the church in June 1981 from Wilmerding, Pennsylvania, successfully doubling membership during his tenure, overseeing reforms and improvements to the building from 1982-1985, and becoming President of the North Side Pastor's Alliance; and,

WHEREAS, Metropolitan Baptist Church has organized an Outreach Ministries that services the community via a health component, a counseling outreach program, and events such as their sponsorship of a Senior Prom, an evening where the community comes together for dinner, dancing, and fellowship; and,

WHEREAS, the philanthropy and charitable work of Metropolitan Baptist Church has provided the community with invaluable programs and services, with their distribution of surplus food, distribution of clothes to persons in distress, day care center, a Head Start program, adult classes to teach reading and writing, Boy and Girl Scout troops, a Benevolent Fund that dispenses to the needy and provides tax assistance to senior citizens, a continuous voter registration campaign, a scholarship fund, and a Board of Christian Education that holds workshops and training classes; and,

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Baptist Church will be celebrating its 160th Anniversary at the “160th Anniversary Luncheon” on November 6, 2010;
