Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and thank the staff, donors, authors and listeners who have supported the Gist Street Reading Series for 10 years and have created a strong literary community in the City of Pittsburgh; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares October 26, 2010, “Gist Street Reading Series Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Gist Street Reading Series began in March of 2001 and was hosted on the third floor of James Simon's Sculpture Studio at 305 Gist Street; and
 
WHEREAS, the Series is held on the first Friday of every month and features two authors, music, homemade bread, potluck dishes and raffle prizes; and
 
WHEREAS, the founders created the Series to create a robust arts community through the development of a literary event that was open to the whole community and tried to be simple, fun and unpretentious; and
 
WHEREAS, the final reading will take place on December 3, 2010; and
 
WHEREAS, the Series has presented readings from nearly 200 local and national poets and writers, with a focus on emerging writers publishing their first or second books; and
 
WHEREAS, over the last 10 years, the Gist Street Reading Series has been staffed by Sherrie Flick, Nancy Krygowski, James Simon, Rick Schweikert, John Fleenor, Jon Ritz, Tom Kizer, Cindy Closkey, Antoine Leyn and Bob Marion.
