WHEREAS, the Zionist Organization of America, founded in 1897, is the oldest Zionist organization in the United States and according to the Wall Street Journal, “the most credible advocate for Israel on the American Jewish scene today”; and,
WHEREAS, nationally, the ZOA aggressively works to educate the American public and Congress about legal issues in order to advance the interests of Israel and the Jewish people, assists American victims of terrorism, fight anti-Semitism and anti Israel bias in the media and college campuses and strives to enforce existing laws in order to safeguard the rights of the Jewish people in the US and Israel; and,
WHEREAS, locally, the ZOA-Pittsburgh District sponsors guest speakers on Israel, has an Investment Club which purchases Israeli stocks, gives scholarships to assist young people to study in Israel, supports Jewish youth on college campuses, takes non-Jewish clergy to Israel; and,
WHEREAS, the ZOA-Pittsburgh District will be holding its 2010 Awards Dinner on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Congregation Beth Shalom where they will be honoring and roasting Dr. Cyril H. Wecht with ZOA's Lifetime Achievement Award as well honoring Marion Taube with the Natalie E. Novick Community Leadership Award and Harold F. Marcus with the Israel Service Award.; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Cyril H. Wecht, MD, JD is a nationally renowned forensic pathologist who has served as a medical - legal and forensic consultant in civil and criminal trials thought the US. He was the Allegheny County Coroner for over 20 years and Chairman of the Allegheny Democratic Committee. He has a deep love for Israel and the Jewish people; and,
WHEREAS, Marion Taube, an Accountant by profession, has been involved in several Jewish organizations, having served on the Board and Treasurer of the ZOA, Yeshiva Pre-school, Volunteers for Israel, Hadassah and Na'amat. ;and,
