Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Meg Cheever, David May - Stein and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh for being recognized and honored as the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition's Citizens of the Year ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, October 14, 2010, to be “SQUIRREL HILL URBAN COALITION CITIZENS OF THE YEAR DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition is a non-profit community group dedicated to preserving and improving the quality of life in the 14th Ward of the City of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, members of the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition work to provide leadership to the community by studying, debating and advocating positions on issues affecting the neighborhood's vitality reflected through a long range planning process which fosters community based initiatives in housing, education, transportation, commercial, residential and institutional development and parks and open spaces ; and,

WHEREAS, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition is holding its Citizens of the Year Awards Dinner on Thursday, October 14, 2010, at the Holiday Inn University Center to honor three outstanding citizens who best represent the goals of the organization and are crucial to the vitality of the neighborhood ; and,

WHEREAS, the 2010 Citizens of the Year are Meg Cheever, David May- Stein and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, Meg Cheever is the founding President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy whose strategic management approach for the city's four largest parks, which include two in the 14th Ward, has earned her accolades and awards as well as SHUC's highest honor; and,

WHEREAS, David May Stein is Principal of Pittsburgh Colfax ALA , having spent his entire distinguished career in the Pittsburgh School District. His dedication and commitment to children and his dynamic approach to effective education have earned him the respect of the Squirrel Hill community; and,

WHEREAS, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, originally established as a settlement house, has been the recreational, health and wellness, cultural arts, childhood, youth and social service resource for the Squirrel Hill community and has recorded 1.3 million visits to their facilities last year.
