Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the International Day of Peace and thanks its local organizers; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare of September 21, 2010 as “International Peace Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace was established by a UN resolution in 1981 and unanimously reaffirmed by the General Assembly in 2001; and
 
WHEREAS, the International Day of Peace, celebrated every year on September 21st, is a global observance when organizations, communities, nations, governments, and hundreds of millions of people around the world highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace; and
WHEREAS, it is the hope of the United Nations and all participants involved in the International Day of Peace that their activities will ultimately work to support a global ceasefire to occur annually on September 21st; and
 
WHEREAS, locally, the International Day of Peace will be observed by a 24 hour peace vigil, a special Peace Service, a reblessing of the Peace Pole  and an International Flag Ceremony with all events taking place at St. Mary of the Mount in Mt. Washington; and
 
WHEREAS, this year's celebration will focus on the role of youth in building peace for the world with the theme "Peace = Future."
