Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Citiparks and Citiparks Director Mike Radley for the outstanding effort in making the Great Race a world class event and to Jeanne, David and Gregg Caliguiri for their ongoing support and dedication to the Race that honors the memory of their beloved husband and father, Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, September 26, 2010, to be “RICHARD S. CALIGUIRI CITY OF PITTSBURGH GREAT RACE DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race is a 10 K run and a 5k run and fitness walk which provides an opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels to take part in the festivities on Great Race Sunday, the last Sunday in September ; and,

WHEREAS, Mayor Richard Caliguiri, a visionary mayor credited with Renaissance II, the Cultural District concept, the development of Station Square and the Pittsburgh Technology Center, began the race in 1977 as a community “fun run”, having once been Director of Parks and Recreation and seeing the need for a community event ; and,

WHEREAS, the Great Race became known as the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race in 1993, six years after his untimely death, to honor him and his commitment to the people of the City of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, the Great Race has grown over the years into a world class 10K and 5K road race that has become a true Pittsburgh tradition , becoming Pennsylvania's largest 10K race with an expected 14,000 participants this year ; and,

WHEREAS, Mike Radley, current Director of Citiparks , has been Race Director since 1987 and has been responsible for many wonderful changes such as the introduction of the 5K run/walk, the innovative electronic timing and scoring system called the ChonoTrack and the Junior Great Race while also facing challenges such as the cancellation of the Race in 2003 and the flooding of Point State Park in 2004. He also was responsible for bringing the Race back after its one year hiatus.
