Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize, appreciate and celebrate the life and wisdom of George C. Lichauer, Jr., his love of family and friends, who proved what one man can do to honor his fellow servicemen both here and gone, for those who are gone, he kept their memories alive; for those here, he shared a bond of brotherhood, telling stories, and keeping them in good spirits.

WHEREAS, GEORGE C. LICHAUER Jr., was a well-known volunteer in Brighton Heights, loving husband of Flora M. Bosenberg just shy of 52 years, committed father of six; loving brother of six; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Lichauer passed away Friday, August 20, 2010 at the age of 80 and will be missed by his loving family, and his friends who call him "a good guy; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Lichauer retired early after a career-ending disability from Thorofare Markets giving him lots of time to spend with his family and friends; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Lichauer, a veteran of the Korean War, supported the Oliver High School Junior R.O.T.C. Bear Battalion since its founding in 1979 taking the Cadets to Memorial Day flag placing, assured the inclusion of at least two Oliver Cadets at the annual Allegheny County Youth Achievement Dinner, supported the Military Ball for 30 consecutive years presenting the American Legion Awards for Scholastic and Academic Excellence, secured positions for four boys and two girls participated in the highly competitive and prestigious Leadership Symposiums at Shippensburg University,  Lt. Col. Michael Cassetori, Senior Army Instructor, for the Oliver Bear Battalion relayed, "Anything we needed or wanted, he'd make it happen; and"
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Lichauer volunteered with the Heinz for 25 years, was a lifetime member of the Garfield Club, a 26 year member in good standing with Allegheny Elks #339, Post Commander of American Legion #681 Woods Run, and worked on Memorial Day programs in Legion Park; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Lichauer spent an unprecedented 17,693 hours volunteering at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Aspinwall becoming buddies with disabled veterans, telling war stories, handling any of their needed governmental paperwork, making sure their days were rich and as calm as possible; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Lichauer was so highly regarded by those in the military both here and throughout the VA Hospital system that he was buried with High Military Honors, including a 21 Gun Salute, on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 in the family section at Highwood Cemetery; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Lichauer was an inspiration to friends, family and the students of the Bear Battalion of Oliver High School, teaching them a valuable lesson about volunteering and taking care of others;
