Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate and commend the Smith Family, and all those before them, for carrying on the tradition of a true community newspaper for these past 70 years and providing the residents of the Hilltop and South Side neighborhoods with an invaluable source of information. NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, proclaim, Tuesday, August 31, 2010, to be South Pittsburgh Reporter Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the South Pittsburgh Reporter is celebrating its 70th year of publication in the South Pittsburgh neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Jones first published The Reporter in 1939 as a means for South Side merchants to get their messages to consumers and as a way for Mr. Jones to promote the “Olde Tyme Dances” he operated in the Lithuanian Hall on the South Side; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jones published The Reporter until his death in 1967 at the age of 80, his daughter Ethel Mosko carried on until John Major, Jr. took over, and in 1979 the Smith Family took the reins from Mr. Major and has carried on the tradition of informing the residents of the South Pittsburgh neighborhoods of community events and matters of community interest, to this day; and
WHEREAS, the Smith Family, first Roberta and now her son Tom, increased the coverage of The Reporter from its original distribution to Allentown, Beltzhoover, Bon Air, Montooth, Mt. Washington and South Side, to now include Carrick, Knoxville, and the Borough of Mt. Oliver, which now considers The Reporter to be its official newspaper; and
WHEREAS, John Lubawski, another member of the Smith family, has been delivering The Reporter for more than 25 years, often with the help of his children, who started carrying 'big bundles' as early as age 3, he now delivers the over 12,000 Reporters which are printed each week and placed in more than 120 locations for distribution; and
WHEREAS, the focus of The Reporter has always been on community events and neighborhood news, during World War II, The Reporter published Honor Rolls, Service News and helped to sell war bonds; during the 1970's and the closing of the steel mills, The Reporter was an invaluable source of information regarding help that was available to the displaced steel workers and their families; documented the resurgence of South Side and the development of the SouthSide Works; and has continued to keep the residents, workers and visitors in the Hillto...
