Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate the Parish Family of the St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, August 8, 2010 , to be “ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM BYZANTINE CATHOLIC CHURCH DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church is a historic Eastern Catholic Church located in the Greenfield Section of Pittsburgh ; and,

WHEREAS, established in 1910 by Rusyn immigrants from the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe who came to Pittsburgh to work in the steel industry and who settled in the small valley called Four Mile Run, which they called Ruska Dolina or Rusyn Valley which was adjacent to the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company, St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Church will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year; and,

WHEREAS, the church first met in a hall on Saline Street with its first pastor, Rev. Alexij Petrasovich assuming duties in August 1910 but eventually outgrew its surroundings and in 1931, the decision was made to build the new and present church on the corner of Saline and Anthony Streets, with the Cornerstone Blessing in 1932 and the Church Dedication in 1935; and,

WHEREAS, St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Church is the site of significant religious history as the Byzantine Catholic Metropolitan Church of Pittsburgh's radio ministry was begun there in 1956 and has been the scene of many priestly, diaconal and lectorate ordinations and also is known as the family church of artist Andy Warhol ; and,

WHEREAS, St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Church is an architectural landmark for many commuters on the Parkway East who pass and look upon its onion domes and Slavic-style crosses and stands as a visible sign of the faith and generosity of its people ;and,

WHEREAS, St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Church will celebrate the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Parish with a Divine Liturgy of Thanksgiving at the Church followed by a Reception at he the Circuit Center on Sunday August 8, 2010.
