Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That the People of the City of Pittsburgh declare today, Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 “Fran Accamando Day” and a City wide day of memoriam in honor of Fran Accamando.

WHEREAS, Fran Accamando was a committed leader from the neighborhood of Overbrook in the City of Pittsburgh, where she served her community for more than twenty years; and

WHEREAS, Fran started her career in public service as a blockwatch captain with the Overbrook Blockwatch in 1984; and

WHEREAS, The following year she co-write, with Carol Anthony, a pictorial history of her neighborhood, titled, “Overbrook Looking Back;” and

WHEREAS, In 1985 Fran became the President of the Overbrook Community Council and began working hard to bring resources and attention to her neighborhood and all of South Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS, She gave particular attention to resolving the chronic flooding issues that plagued Overbrook for years, lobbying her local, state, and federal elected leaders for action; and

WHEREAS, Through her leadership efforts, action was finally taken to relocate the victims of the most serious flooding, the residents of Ansonia Place and the Overbrook Senior Center, and to compel the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority to replace outdated infrastructure that contributed to the flooding; and

WHEREAS, She was instrumental in the opening and furnishing of the Overbrook Community Center, now named in her honor as the Fran Accamando Community Center; and

WHEREAS, Fran was the co-founder of the Saw Mill Run Task Force, and a member of the Zone Three Public Safety Council, the South Pittsburgh Revitalization Team, United Citizens Against Narcotics, the Brentwood Economic Development Group, and many more committed community organizations; and

WHEREAS, Fran's dedication, passion and accomplishments have proven to be an inspiration to community volunteers and activists across Pittsburgh, and thousands have been touched by her generosity of spirit; and

WHEREAS, In addition to her community work in Pittsburgh, Fran was a committed wife and mother, and a friend to all in Pittsburgh.
