WHEREAS, Louise Silk comes from a large Jewish family that emigrated from Eastern Europe; and,

WHEREAS, Louise was born in the East End of Pittsburgh in 1950; and,

 

WHEREAS, Louise attended Peabody High School, and earned her undergraduate degree from Drexel University; and,

 

WHEREAS, Louise is a fiber artist, entrepreneur, author, dedicated mother, grandmother, and partner, teacher, learner, and friend; and,

 

WHEREAS, Louise has contributed to the artistic, spiritual, and historical betterment of the City of Pittsburgh through the art of quilting; and,

 

WHEREAS, Louise has spent more than 50 years at her craft contributing to the cultural advancement of the city from City Quilt to SilkQuilt, BubbeWisdom and beyond; and,

 

WHEREAS, Louise is dedicated to combatting the fast fashion industry by running a zero-waste studio; and,

 

WHEREAS, Louise and her daughter, Sarah Silk, created SilkDenim, a project that upcycles discarded fabrics into objects of value, practical use, beauty, and meaning; and,

 

WHEREAS, The Heinz History Museum will showcase her art in an exhibit titled Louise Silk: A Patchwork Life, beginning September 1st , 2024; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate Louise Silk for her years of work that have enriched the City’s cultural identity and artistic legacy; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, September 1, 2024, to be “Louise Silk Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
